Renowned Eye Surgeon, Specialist in LASIK, Cataract and Cornea

Dr. Sujal Shah decided to become an eye surgeon, approximately thirty years ago, drawn by the precise microsurgery. When he was introduced to the nascent field of laser vision correction at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, he was fascinated with the idea of visual independence. He knew what he wanted to for the rest of his life, to help people see better without glasses or contact- lenses. He has been at the forefront of every significant technological advancement in laser surgery to make vision correction safer and more accurate. In 2011, after almost 18 years of innovative vision correction surgery, he started SMILE, a pioneering out-of-the-box technique hitherto unrivalled in safety and accuracy. The last decade has been an enriching experience for him in terms of spreading SMILE to 1000s of patients.

Top Mumbai Eye Surgeon, Dr. Sujal Shah, explains his passion for vision correction. “As a young medical student, when my grandfather needed cataract surgery, I was amazed at the independence he got from the then newly introduced intraocular lenses. Until then, most other relatives needed thick glasses to see clearly after very cumbersome surgery.

The inspiration from that eye surgery, which seemed like a miracle, carried Dr. Shah all the way through a residency and specialized fellowships at premier institutions in the world. Dr. Shah enjoys vision correction and applies the same passion to every patient he operates. It is this extra level of commitment that makes him an excellent eye surgeon.

A Word From The Doctor

Dear Patient,

Clear vision is a precious gift. When I first got glasses, at age 14, I clearly remember hating the weight on my nose, the limited field of vision, the fogging while getting out of the AC and many others. Most of all, the feeling of imperfection or dependence on waking and not seeing things clearly around me. Gradually I forgot what it was to see without glasses.

In 1993, during my residency at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, I heard about LASIK, and this was a turning point in my life. In 1996, I went to premier institutions in the US for specialized fellowships to master the full spectrum of vision correction techniques.

I developed such confidence in the procedure, that I decided to have LASIK surgery on my own eyes, and for the first time in my adult life I experienced the simple pleasures of life. Once again, I could wake up to clear vision, greet people when outdoors, drive and watch TV or movies without my glasses. In fact, I have personally treated my wife, parents, brother and hundreds of doctors, physicians and their family members to share the joy of this visual freedom with them.

Over two decades, I have delivered lectures on vision correction at local, national and international meetings, contributed to scientific journals, conducted clinical research and clinical trials and trained many doctors in LASIK. But, mainly, I performed surgery after surgery for thousands of patients from all walks of life.

After a decade of establishing refractive surgery at different hospitals, I started Samyak Drishti with the latest world-class equipment to ensure uncompromising standards and offer customized solutions for people with simple to complex vision conditions. To help patients feel at home, I wanted a calm, unhurried atmosphere and to spend adequate time for patient assessment and education.

From remote controlled digital vision testing, to advanced diagnostics that synchronise seamlessly with our sophisticated laser systems for customization, we stay at the forefront of technology. In 2010, we started Presbyond LASIK, a novel solution for reading glasses. In 2011, we started SMILE, a completely new, minimalistic out of the box technique that is setting new benchmarks for safety and accuracy.

Vision correction is exciting for most, but also scary for some. Most patients are worried about safety. My response is, if you are suitable and have realistic expectations, the results of vision correction are really gratifying.

I believe in treating patients as family and apply the same exacting standards to my patients. After a thorough assessment, I educate patients about their suitability for vision correction. A distinct advantage at Samyak Drishti is that I am not restricted to a single procedure. If someone is a less than ideal candidate for LASIK, I clearly explain this and suggest suitable alternatives from our wide range of customized solutions or none at all if that’s what I find is most appropriate.

I think you will be excited when you see the clear difference we offer. I look forward to helping you reduce your dependence on glasses and welcome you to visual independence at Samyak Drishti.

Yours sincerely,

Sujal Shah
